Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum - Technological pathways to accelerate decarbonization goals
The suite of technologies available to abate emissions from the energy system is expansive, but there is no one-size-fits-all approach. The deployment of technologies and their timelines will depend on business models, the clearing of bureaucratic roadblocks, and national or economic security concerns. In the near future, installing methane abatement systems at scale is paramount. In the long term, the vast array of technologies that can decarbonize power, industry, and transport has the potential to dramatically reform energy systems. What are the main drivers influencing technological pathways towards decarbonization? What assumptions are made when projecting the future technology mix? Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum - Financing the energy transition in emerging markets and developing economies
Mobilizing private investment through blended finance is crucial for accelerating the energy transition in emerging markets and developing economies. Existing multilateral institutions have shown promise in delivering necessary reforms to do so, but calls for new financial structures have emerged to address challenges of slow bureaucratic processes, inflexible instruments, insufficient private capital, and debt in the Global South. How can financial institutions, the public sector, and the private sector collaborate to deliver on international sustainable development goals? Moderated by: David Sandalow, Inaugural Fellow at the Center on Global Energy Policy and Director of the Energy and Environment Concentration at the School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University Javier Campillo, Vice Minister of Energy, Republic of Colombia Linda-Eling Lee, Founding Director and Head, MSCI Sustainability Institute Demetrios Papathanasiou, Global Director for the World Bank's Energy and Extractives Global Practice, The World Bank Pradeep Tharakan, Director, Energy Transition, Asian Development Bank Adam Wang-Levine, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Climate, Environment, and Infrastructure, US Department of the Treasury

Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum - Leadership panel - Voices of the global south: Energy security and economic....
Recent disruptions in global energy markets have added momentum to the pace of the energy transition. Yet, it has become clear that a North-South divide in transition priorities and strategies has emerged. Many developing countries are prioritizing energy security and economic development over climate mitigation alone. Maintaining growth will require reconciliation between addressing climate change and ensuring economic progress and access to reliable, affordable energy in the Global South. What will this balance look like? Can the energy transition itself facilitate development? How can developed countries support a just energy transition in the Global South? Moderated by: Jason Marczak, Vice President and Senior Director, Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center, Atlantic Council Speakers: Fahad Aldhubaib, Senior Vice President of Strategy & Market Analysis, Aramco Herbert Krapa, Deputy Minister of Energy, Ghana Hyginus ‘Gene’ Leon, President, Caribbean Development Bank Marcelino Madrigal, Head of the IDB Energy Division and Head of the IDB Group Electromobility Group, Inter-American Development Bank Pietro Sampaio Mendes, Secretary for Oil, Natural Gas, and Biofuels, Brazil

Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum - De-risking, decoupling, and the consequences for net zero
As the world pursues a net-zero energy system, geopolitics are dividing the global economy into rival camps. Relations between the United States and China continue to sour, introducing ruptures to clean energy supply chains. Meanwhile, sanctions against Russia are creating parallel markets between the Global North and South. Policymakers in the democratic world are at a crossroads, between ambitions to “de-couple” new energy supply chains in the name of security, and a more moderate philosophy to “de-risk,” which seeks to diversify supply chains and re-shore certain critical industries. This session will address the relationship between the United States, China, Russia, and the rest of the world, and the trade-offs associated with these two approaches. Moderated by: Andrew Sollinger, Chief Executive Officer, Foreign Policy Speakers: Helima Croft, Managing Director and Global Head of Commodity Strategy and MENA Research, RBC Capital Markets Charles Hendry, Distinguished Fellow, Global Energy Center, Atlantic Council Marisa Lago, Under Secretary for Commerce for International Trade, US Department of Commerce Joseph McMonigle, Secretary General, International Energy Forum

Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum - Forging a united energy security front ahead of Europe’s second winter of war
Europe succeeded at securing sufficient energy supplies through last winter in the face of Russia’s weaponization of natural gas, but at significant cost. Now, the continent faces a new challenge for the upcoming winter as the fog of the pandemic clears and global demand for liquefied natural gas revives. As European policymakers look to continue supporting Ukraine, how can Europe ensure an affordable and secure energy supply, while maintaining public solidarity with Ukraine, and momentum on the clean energy transition? As negotiations at COP28 continue, how is Europe’s energy crisis altering the continent’s climate ambitions? Moderated by: David Goldwyn, Chairman, Energy Advisory Group, Global Energy Center, Atlantic Council Speakers: Alan Armstrong, Chief Executive Officer, Williams Daiva Garbaliauskaite, Vice Minister of Energy, Republic of Lithuania Grant Isaac, Executive Vice-President & Chief Financial Officer, Cameco Jake Levine, Chief Climate Officer, DFC Mary Burce Warlick, Deputy Executive Director, International Energy Agency

Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum - Energy systems of the future
The world is seeing historic levels of investment in the energy transition—but commitments are not yet enough to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Nonetheless, market advancements in hydrogen, energy storage, electric vehicles, nuclear technologies, AI, and more show promise in helping countries decarbonize, but barriers to their deployment at scale must be removed, and the timeline for innovation and deployment accelerated. As the global community works to resolve these issues, it must weigh several competing requirements, such as equity and affordability. How should global stakeholders prioritize their efforts, and set the pace for energy system decarbonization? Moderated by: Rich Powell, CEO, Clear Path Mohamed Al Braiki, Strategy & Planning Director, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation Roeland Baan, President and Chief Executive Officer, Topsoe Miranda Ballentine, Strategic Advisor and Former/Founding CEO, Clean Energy Buyers Association Roger Martella, Chief Sustainability Officer, GE Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Kingdom of Morocco

Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum - Leadership conversation - Net zero producers forum
As the energy transition accelerates, it is necessary for oil and gas producing economies to articulate a credible pathway to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. The Net-Zero Producers Forum, a cooperative government effort of six oil and gas producing countries, is an initiative designed to foster and promote credible strategies to reach net-zero in producer economies. It also has a key role in propagating global solutions such as methane abatement, as evidenced by the launch of an “Upstream Methane Abatement Toolkit” which highlights ways to implement methane abatement policies. As the oil and gas sector comes sharply under focus at COP28, what is the role of the government in reinforcing private sector action to reduce emissions? How should oil and gas producing economies weigh economic competitiveness with the climate mitigation imperative? Moderated by: Angela Wilkinson, Secretary General, World Energy Council Khalid Almehaid, Chief Negotiator for the Climate Agreements, Ministry of Energy, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Andrew Light, Assistant Secretary, International Affairs, US Department of Energy Rachel McCormick, Director General, International and Intergovernmental Affairs, Natural Resources Canada

Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum - Addressing emissions in oil and gas: A net-zero imperative
Including the oil and gas industry in the global dialogue around climate mitigation is prudent, as the sector must decrease its operations’ emissions intensity on the road to net zero. To ensure success on this front, the Global Decarbonization Alliance, an initiative of the COP28 presidency, will work to align the global oil and gas industry toward commitments to lower scope one and two emissions worldwide. The alliance is coalescing a broad consortium of producers to this imperative, and building frameworks for the oil and gas industry to work with high-consuming sectors to accountably drive real-world reductions in emissions by 2030. Abu Dhabi Sustainable Finance Forum - Panel | How Can We Improve Carbon Markets Quickly?
Since the creation of carbon markets and trading with the Kyoto Protocol at COP3 in 1997, the global carbon market has grown to €865bn in 2022. However, markets are fragmented and cover less than a quarter of global emissions. Carbon markets and carbon taxes have been criticised for failing to put a high enough price on carbon to drive significant emission reductions, and carbon offsets for not meeting expectations. With carbon pricing still considered to be one of the best tools to drive emission reductions, we ask our panel of experts how this system can be re-engineered to actually deliver on its promise. Labeling Emissions on Traded Goods
Decarbonizing the global economy requires a significant increase in the transparency of embedded emissions within internationally traded products. In the same way that consumers are able to make informed choices based on the mandatory nutrient information of supermarket products, we are rapidly moving towards product-level emissions accountability. This not-too-distant future involves consumers that are empowered to make decisions based on the carbon-intensity of different products. Product emissions reporting is already a fast-approaching reality for many industrial sectors due to regulations such as the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and similar emerging legislation across the world.
